Route editor and outdoor utility
Plan your route before you start, and see track stats while on your way.
Draw a route tapping on the integrated map, or import it setting start and destination addresses, or from a file and you will get immediately:
- route length
- time estimate (speed can be specified also manually)
- elevation profile
- ascent and descent
Then, once you are started, RoutePad calculates where you are along the track, and you get:
- your current position as address, coordinates, altitude
- your current position along the elevation profile
- time estimate based on average, instant or manually specified speed
- distance, ascent, descent done and remaining
It’s ideal for walking, hiking, jogging, riding, driving, flying.., it does not need to be running all the time like a tracking app, so it won’t drain your device’s battery.
Features
- Route editor: it’s very quick and easy to create routes directly on the Google maps with your fingers
- Length calculator
- Time estimation, based on your average, instant or a manually specified speed.
- Shows informations about your current position: address, coordinates, elevation
- Elevation profile graph
- Ascent and descent calculations
- Stopwatch
- Start time, end time and pause are editable
- Routes can be saved and reused
- Routes can be reversed
- Kilometers, miles and knots support

I don’t get how to import a gpx file from my computer. I select the import button, select “file from my computer” and a screen comes up saying ‘To import….must be on same network. (I am) “open this url in your computer’s browser …. ” then it gives my phones address. I can see my phone on my network in explorer but I can’t copy a file to it. When I copy the url they give me into my browser nothing happens. What am I missing?
@Thea: after you have copied the url on your browser (and pressed enter) you should see a page like this:
. Click “choose a file”, choose your gpx file and press “import”. At this moment, the app on the iPhone should import the route. Once done, tap on it and press “open”. If this doesn’t work let me know (here or at mail@matteocaldari.it )
Baixei o programa, mas não consigo abrí-lo.
I’m having the same issue at Thea in Post on June 7. My trouble is I am using Safari. I open the app on my IPHONE and then to the bookmark in Bonjour. I see my phone and when I click on it I get the screen “Import Track”. I select my gpx file and click on import. At that time the browser trys to connect to the Url but the at that time the App closes on the phone and Safari indicates that is can not connect to server.
@Darrin thank you very much for reporting the issue, I’m working to fix it.
Can I hit the home button adn will the program keep running?
The same issue i can´t import my gpx or kml files even i can´t open the url, i´m working on windows 7 with safari and iexplorer8 and i have the same issue i hope you can fix that.
@Luis, problem is fixed, update sent to Apple, expect it to be available in a few days
@Gary, since the route is already defined, RoutePad does not record your movements, therefore doesn’t need to be running in background
Great program! The only one I found that is able to open large routes.
It would be just perfect, if it would be able to use offline (preloaded) maps like Offmaps. Any chance this is coming?
@Steffen, thank you! I’m really glad you noticed that. About offline maps: it’s not on the next features list, but I’ll see. At the moment: if you are online and navigate maps, they are cached, so then when you are offline you will be able to see them. And there’s a hidden feature: if you tap 3 times “hybrid” in the map type selector, the terrain map is displayed
Ciao Matteo,

Love the app. Been looking for something like this for a while and it does everything and more.
I’ve mamanged to import a GPX file by connecting through WiFi, but only the once. When I try it since, I just get a message from the browser (FIrefox) that it can’t find the server. Is this a problem at my end do you think or is there a certain trick I need to know.
Grazie Matteo,
facendo come dici funziona.
ciao
Hi, is there a way to re-load or refresh the altitude graphs? Can they be updated automatically? I have several that have obvious errors or no information in them at all for some sections where i know there should be large variations in altitude. Cheers
Import gpx issue: Using Chrome, I can import gpx file, but as soon as routepad starts to receive, it closes. Browser says import was successful, but when I restart routepad it isn’t there. I’m thinking it has to do with gpx file itself? Are there certain text strings that may cause this? I can send you file.
@Brad: yes, I’d really appreciate if you send me the gpx file (you can find my email here), thanks
@Shannon, initially I thought it would not be necessary, but I’ll add it in the next update
I’ve added new features to RoutePad, including adding automatic segments to a route, import of walk directions, improvements in the elevation graph. So I need some beta testers, if you’re interested drop me an email
Hi Matteo,
i would like to be a beta tester …..
I would test it during several travels … in the air (flying ;-)) and on the road .. as well as walking.
Post/email me, ok ?!
Best
Hi Matteo,
I really like your app. Nice, and well designed.
Hope a retina display graphic update is on the way.
Before I put a review on the french appStore, there’s something I’d like to know.
“automatic segments to a route” : Is it me or this doesn’t work (RoutePas 1.1)? Seems a very nice feature to me but can’t make it work. And, how is this feature working exactly ? Coul you explain ?
I think you should provide a small manual on your app.
Also, I miss the possibility to add waypoints in between two.
Anyway, very good app. Like it ! Thanks.
@Manu: thank you! An automatic segment is fetched using Google driving directions: the starting address is the current last waypoint in your route (the red flag) and the destination is where you place the new red flag. Be sure that both waypoints are on a road. A help section, retina display support and adding waypoints between others are in development
Thanks Matteo,
But it’s not yet clear for me. Could you describe from A to Z the procedure please ? Like if I was your grand’ma ;-)
@Manu: ok, let’s see if a small video can explain it better :D
version 1.1.1 is out, fixes the problem with automatic segments (thanks @Manu for the collaboration)
Hi Matteo, thanks very much. This app is exactly what I was looking for. Just some ideas what I think after two days use what I would wish-):
1. folder structure in the routes listing
2. for this kind of app I dont like the 2 finger zoom from apple because of my hands being on the wheel of my car. I would prefer a plus / minus zoom (or maybe 3 storable zoom factors)
And what is superb: the possibility to export the google maps into this app per gmx/kml.
Best wishes from Austria. gerald.
@Gerald thanks a lot for your feedback, zoom controls are already on the next features list, folder navigation is a good idea. Servus!
Hi, Matteo. I installed your program yesterday. I can not upload .gpx files after connecting a safari browser with routepad. I can see the “import files” page, I select my computer’s file, click the import file button, but can only see after that a white page on safari and nothing happens on routepad. I tried to connect using my home’s network and an ad-hoc network. Thank you for your help
Matteo, I solved the problem myself. I could transfer the gpx file only when I configured my network to use static addresses. Thank you.

Hi ALL,
WORKAROUND: in your iphone conect to your Wireless AP then enter to this connection NOTE down all IP’s and all techinical info’s then configure this connection with the same IP’s but setting a STATIC IP. Then this application shoul be working and should show you in your browser what you need.
(I’m using a iphone 4 – IOS 4.1.2)
ADMIN: plese fix this issue or atleast instruct the users how to fix this themselfs.
Regards,
Meserias

One more thing it’s possibile to NEED to remove DNS servers when you complet STATIC ip’s in your iphone. This will get it work and show what you need in your browser.

@Mihai crashes fixed, update submitted to the App Store, thank you for your cooperation!
Hi, is it possible to download maps voor offline use?
Hi,
I like the program, very handy for working out distance on hiking routes, however, do you plan to release an iPad friendly version? 2x scaling is fine but having a native screen size that fits iPad would be nice.
I’m so excited to use this app. I downloaded today, then imported a KML file. The KML file had 260 coordinates (lines of lat, long pairs), and displayed correctly in Google Earth. It was a 24 mile route. When I selected the route within RoutePad, the route had only 1 way point and was of a length of 0 miles. How can I display the entire route? What did I do wrong?
Fantastic app! Thanks! I wish for the offline beefed up version?!
Thank you for your kind comments!
Unfortunately, offline maps and iPad version are not planned at the moment..
Hi Mateo,
I find that internal web-server from RoutePad app running on my iPhone4 it’s doesn’t show web-interface on my Laptop/Desktop until I use wireless connection on RoutePad app. So, first user has to make some ZoomIn/ZoomOut to Google maps showed in RoutePad then quick go to Routes > import > “a file from your computer” and tap Import and also quick access form laptop/desktop type http://192.168…. to accces RoutePad internal web-server to be able to import GPX/KML file. If it’s possible try to initialize wireless and to establish a dummy connection to GoogleMaps or something so the internal web-server will be available when user lunch RoutePad and goes directly to import route from his computer.
An interesting feature, is ability to open GPX/KML file form email attachment directly to RoutePad (and it’s also the easiest method to add routes to RoutePad).
With al respect
Mihai – ROMANIA
I’m a big fan of this app, but it would be really nice if it supported the Retina display resolution.
@Mihai, @Naim I’m working on both problems, hope to release an update soon
Matteo
After importing directions, there’s no elevation data available. Is this because I’m using the lite version?
@heidi if you already tapped the small “reload” button in the last section of the dashboard, and still have no elevation data, it’s because of a bug. An update, which fixes also this issue, is currently in beta test and will be released soon
What a great app! Thanks a lot for providing this.
Finally I can create/edit routes on my iPhone. One more step towards a PC free world of trekking would be, if it was possible to export routes directly on the iPhone.
Some other GPS apps (like GPS Kit) have the option to transfer a route by using the menu item “Open GPX in…” and then choose one of the apps that are registered to use this file format.
Routepad is already registered, since it appears in the mentioned GPS Kit menu.
Could you please consider inmplementing this feature? It would really be a bold step towards PC-free usage.
Thanks,
Tom
